regional conference on "Transition towards Independent Living within the Community for Persons with Disability"

Dear colleagues,

It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the regional conference on “Transition towards Independent Living within the Community“, organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in cooperation with the Government of Malta and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities. The conference will be held on 14 and 15 February 2023 in Lebanon and virtually on Zoom.

The conference will focus on the theme of independent living and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the community. It will explore the policies and programs that support countries in ensuring this right and offer an opportunity to share promising country experiences with focus on overcoming challenges and discuss opportunities moving forward. The conference will also feature a discussion of eight research papers from European and Arab counties that were chosen following a Call for Papers issued by the organizers.

This conference will be the first event for the “Arab-EU Research Network on Disability,” which was launched by the organizers in early 2022. The Network acts as an inter-regional platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building. It brings together policymakers, academics, researchers and institutions from both Europe and the Arab region for the common objective of pursuing research as a driver for change and improving social inclusion of persons with disabilities.
