What is Malta College of Family Doctors - MCFD?

The Malta College of Family Doctors is the professional body for general (medical) practitioners / family doctors in Malta. Its mission is to encourage, set and maintain the highest possible standards in the specialty of Family Medicine / General Practice in Malta.
The College represents Family Medicine specialists within the Medical Specialist Accreditation Committee of Malta. General practice has been recognised as a medical specialty in Malta since its accession in the European Union in 2004.
Since then, doctors wishing to pursue general practice, also known as family medicine, undergo the Specialist Training Programme in Family Medicine (STPFM). The MCFD is responsible for the curriculum, quality assurance and examination process of the Specialist Training Programme in Family Medicine.
Continued professional development sessions are held for its members with the aim of providing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to specialists in Family Medicine.
The College collaborates with other entities, including the public, to improve patient care, clinical standards and GP training. It also works to shape the healthcare agenda in Malta with regards to evidence-based practice, patient rights and other concepts that promote the holistic healthcare.
An essential objective is to sensitise the public to environmental health, civic engagement and the importance of continuity of care in primary healthcare provision.
