Update re Early Pregnancy Unit

Dear colleague

Update from the Obs & Gynae Department:

Early Pregnancy unit, located on 2nd floor green wards. The cut off for us to see them is 21+6 weeks. Beyond that patients are referred to Delivery suite.

EPU has
  • an emergency room that deals with obstetric EMERGENCY
  • 6 inpatient beds mainly for miscarriages and ectopics
  • EPU outpatient clinic only for follow up of already detected obs problems
  • Recurrent Pregnancy loss clinic

GPs may refer to directly to
  • Emergency Department-  in case of emergency pregnancy issues eg bleeding and pain where the patients are triaged in ED and sent to EPU
  • Emergency Department in case of severe non pregnancy related issues eg. Suspected pneumonia PE etc where the patient is seen and treated accordingly. An obstetric review is requested after the patient is stablised.
  • Recurrent Pregnancy loss clinic via CTOR Gynae-RPLC for 2 or more losses.
  • Antenatal clinic for pregnancy booking

It is important to use the correct services and to avoid inundating emergency services with requests such as :
pregnant and wishes to confirm
12 weeks pregnant and concerned since she did not receive appointment
Pregnant 4 weeks URTI
We are receiving these on a near daily basis. It creates frustration to staff and patients alike.

A power point that may help is attached here:
