MCFD’s next Continued Medical Education event has two lectures:
“Paediatric Podiatric Services in Malta”, by Mr Ivan Farrugia, D Pod SR Pod MPod A SR Ch UK MSc Podiatry(Glasgow); and
“Local Practitioners Perspective on Achilles Tendinopathy: A mixed methodology study”, by Ms Tiziana Mifsud, MSc Clinical Biomechanics (UK) BSc (Hons) Pod SR Pod MPod, A PhD candidate (UoM)
Bionotes:
Mr. Ivan Farrugia is a state registered Podiatrist. He studied at the University of Malta where
he obtained a Diploma in Podiatry back in 1998. Mr. Ivan Farrugia also had the position as
President of the Association of Podiatrist of Malta from 2006 till 2009 and also from 2018 till
date. He also holds the position President of the International Federation Of Podiatrists. Mr.
Ivan Farrugia represented Podiatrists in the Council for Professions Complementary to
Medicine from 2012 till 2013. Mr. Ivan Farrugia worked in different areas of Podiatry but he
took special interest in Podopaediatrics when in 2007, together with the Association of
Podiatrist of Malta carried out a Foot health screening project in 5 different state, private and
church schools around Malta. In 2008 he started an MSc in Podiatry at Glasgow Caledonian
University, Scotland, where he got his Pg Certificate in Podopaediatrics. He concluded his
MSc in 2012 and completed a systematic review on obesity and its contribution on flat feet in
children and adolescents.
Mr. Ivan Farrugia is the team leader at the Podopaediatric clinic within the Health
Department, at the Podiatry centre of excellence, Birkirkara Health Centre. The
Podopaediatric clinic collaborates with other health Paediatric clinics mainly, Orthotics and
Prosthetics Unit at KGH, Paediatric Physiotherapy at MDH, School Medical Services PHC,
CDAU St lukes Hospital and National Sports School, Pembroke.
Bionotes:
Ms. Tiziana Mifsud is a sports podiatrist at Mater Dei Hospital. Her interests focus on the biomechanical mechanisms of lower limb injury in sports and exercise and the influence of interventions on lower limb biomechanics and injury risk. She is currently reading for a Ph.D. at the University of Malta, Department of Podiatry, researching the mechanical properties of the Achilles tendon during injury. She holds a bachelor’s degree in podiatry from the University of Malta and was awarded a Master of Science in Clinical Biomechanics from the University of Brighton, United Kingdom in 2015. She is part of the scientific research team on the Dense Recording of In-shoe Foot Temperature project.
Ms. Tiziana Mifsud held the position of education officer for the Association of Podiatrists of Malta in 2017 and is currently the chairperson of the programme committee for the Global Podiatry Summit ‘24. She is a lecturer at the University of Malta for Podiatry undergraduate studies.
The talks will last about 35 minutes each with time for questions. The talk will be followed by a standing dinner.
