Dear family doctor
Fr Raymond Portelli a priest and a family doctor runs an HIV Clinic, an
elderly home, a night shelter for homeless people , rehabilitation for
drug addicts and alcoholics and medical services for poor and vulnerable
people in Iquitos, Peru.
Iquitos is a rural area in high altitude of about 500,000 inhabitants
that lies about 2 hours flight from the capital Lima.
The only regional hospital in Iquitos cannot cope with the extra demand
incurred because of around 60 daily SARS-CoV-2 cases. Fatal cases are
around 40 per day. About 80 medical doctors are themselves sick and a
few others have died. Medicine stocks are low. PPEs are scarce.
The local Church authorities have commissioned a plant to fill oxygen
cylinders – it provides for 100 gallons per day. As shown in the video
this has arrived and is being assembled and installed. However, the
amount of oxygen cylinders required is far greater than this plant can
deliver – currently 270 gallons are needed.
Through fellow mission volunteer Mr Simon Pisani, Fr Dr Raymond Portelli
calls for support to help him gather funds to commission a second
industrial plant to fill oxygen cylinders and to buy medicines.
