Dear WONCA family,

This week’s newsletter includes a spotlight on a Chinese health clinic which was awarded the WONCA Practice Accreditation, information on an upcoming webinar hosted by the Special Interest Group on Family Medicine and a new Featured Doctor from Nairobi, Kenya.

EXCELLENCE IN FAMILY MEDICINE: The prestigious WONCA Practice Accreditation has been awarded to the Haizhu Jiangnanzhongjie Community Health Centre in Guangzhou, China. This recognition highlights the centre’s dedication to delivering high-quality healthcare and aligning with international standards. The rigorous accreditation process confirmed the centre’s excellence in facilities, staff qualifications, patient care practices, and operational standards. Read the press release in English or Chinese.

Setting Healthcare Standards: The WONCA accreditation program is designed to support and recognize primary care practices committed to excellence. By setting global benchmarks and providing a structured framework for continuous improvement, the program helps healthcare facilities enhance their services and ensure they meet the highest international standards.

WONCA COUNCIL: The annual meeting of the WONCA Council was held on Tuesday, 25 June 2024, with participation from Member Organisations around the world. Thank you to all who attended and to WONCA Past President, Anna Stavdal, who led a workshop on the Global Core Values Project. More on that soon!

HEALTHY PLANET, HEALTHY PEOPLE: This week we feature two stories of family doctors greening their clinics. From the Philippines, Mark Louie C. Mann showcases how reusable placards reduce paper waste and promote eco-friendly practices. In Turkey, Dr. Melike Mercan Baspinar highlights the “Green Clinic” initiative that uses botanical plants to aid smoking cessation.

FEATURED DOCTOR: Join us as we spotlight Dr. Anne Mwikya, an inspiring family doctor from Kenya. Currently serving as the Primary Health Care Network Coordinator in Nairobi County, Dr. Mwikya shared her insights during a field visit to the Makadara Community Health Centre. WONCA News spoke with her about the challenges and opportunities in Kenya’s primary health care system, her training in Cuba’s robust health system, and her experience at the WONCA Africa Region Conference. Read more about Dr. Mwikya.
